OK, so everyone knows the QDH antenna is the real way to go, and I’m sheepish about showing this, so keep the laughter down a little. This is the homebrew maritime VHF vertical (156 MHz), before the extra wire was added to drop to the lower frequency (137 Mhz). It wasn’t expected to hear anything (necessarily) – but was tried in spite of logic and calculations involving the galactic noise level:

Not destined for prime time, no chance whatsoever quarter wave vertical as temporary stand-in for the QDH.
